OUR IDENTITY

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is one of Australia’s most recognisable and culturally significant birds. Found across the north and centre of the continent, including Central Australia, it commands attention with its glossy black plumage, curved crest, and broad, powerful wings. When it flies, flashes of brilliant red-orange or golden tail feathers shimmer against the sky.

Males display deep crimson tail panels, while females are patterned with golden speckles and barred tail feathers. These birds are known for their loud calls, intelligence, and strong pair bonds. They live in eucalypt woodlands and river corridors, relying on the old, hollow trees of Country to raise their young. Their flight across desert skies is a familiar and grounding presence, a symbol of endurance, adaptability, and kinship with the land.

In many First Nations cultures, the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo holds deep meaning. It is regarded as a messenger, protector, and symbol of renewal. Its feathers, black edged with fiery red, are often used in ceremony and art to represent strength, identity, and connection to Country. The bird’s calm determination and lifelong partnerships remind us of the importance of loyalty, unity, and community.

What the Cockatoo Symbolises for Us

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo embodies the values that shape who we are and what we do: strength, resilience, connection, and pride.

Its ability to thrive across harsh landscapes mirrors the spirit of our young people: strong, adaptable, and proud of where they come from.

The feather that features in our identity carries this meaning forward, with black representing grounding, respect, and strength, and the red and orange tones symbolising life, energy, and direction. Together, they reflect balance, staying true to Country while always moving forward.

Why Identity Matters

The Red-tailed Black Cockatoo is more than a symbol, it’s a reflection of how we play, lead, and grow together. Known for its strength, loyalty, and wisdom, the bird lives in family groups, protecting its own while adapting to the challenges of Country. Those same qualities are what bind our programs and guide our purpose.

For Redtails, it’s about strength and leadership standing tall for community, showing pride in every contest, and leading with purpose on and off the field.

For Pinktails, it’s about unity and courage lifting others, building confidence, and proving that determination and heart can change the game.

For Right Tracks, it’s about guidance and resilience helping young people find direction, stay connected to culture, and build the skills to shape their own futures.

Together, we carry the same lesson the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo teaches us stay grounded, play with pride, and always keep flying forward.
